A republic, if you can keep it. These were the words uttered by Benjamin Franklin, who gave Americans a dire warning that a republic’s health is only so healthy as the citizens in it. Self-government in a checks and balances system depends on the virtue and intelligence of the people, and it gives people responsibility for the outcomes of the country. We cannot depend on a king, nor should we want to. We depend on ourselves, which is what makes our foolishness three and a half months into the Biden presidency dangerous.
The job numbers report was released on Friday, showing that 266,000 jobs were created this past month, which seems decent so long as you didn’t know what economists expected. Economists were expecting that number to be 975,000, nearly a million. Falling short of everyone's expectations, President Biden took to the American people today proclaiming that the American Rescue Plan is working, but that you must give the program time to work.
“When we passed the American Rescue Plan, I want to remind everyone, it was designed to help us over the course of a year, not 60 days... We never thought over the first 60 days everything would be fine.”
Well, Mr. President, the economists sure thought otherwise, but maybe they are still living under the impression that Donald Trump is still president, whose economy saw unprecedented job creation and record low unemployment rates. Instead, massive government welfare programs given out by Democrats have incentivized would-be workers from going to get a job, because unemployment payments provide them with as much money or even more money than they would make if they were employed.
“This report reinforces the real truth,” Biden stated. “For years working people and middle-class people have been left out in the cold, struggling to keep their heads above water, while those at the top have done very well. We are still digging out of an economic collapse.”
The collapse was artificially created by a government-mandated shutdown, and government-created solutions proposed by Biden and passed by Democrats have given people thousands of dollars of “free money,” which they are now spending, rising the demand when the supply is short, partly due to the lack of workers. This massive government welfare program initiated by Mr. Biden is beyond reckless. It provides spending money to people that aren’t providing any services or goods to society, and they are spending this money on goods and services at an extraordinary pace in which the market cannot keep up with. This raises the price of those goods. Gas, lumber, steel, and other goods’ prices are all through the roof right now due to this inflation. Even CNN admits that inflation is here and we can expect more of it.
"Today's report makes clear, thank goodness we passed the American Rescue Plan. Help is here, and more help is on the way, and more help is needed," declared Biden.
I bring the Benajmin Franklin quote up as a stern warning for Americans. “Free money” and government handouts sound swell, but the inevitable consequences will arise, and already are. When President Biden says that the American Rescue Plan and government handouts are the solutions to a government-created problem, you shouldn't buy into it. Don’t let President Biden and Congressional Democrats convince you that big government is the easy fix or a fix at all.
